Deciding whether your child should start kindergarten when they are younger or older depends on their developmental readiness, not just their age. Children who have birthdays between 1st January and 30th April can choose whether they start kindergarten in the year they turn 3 (as the youngest children in the group) or the year they turn 4 (as the older children in the group).
At Mentone Pre School we strongly encourage you to consider your child's social, emotional and cognitive development when it comes to starting kindergarten. Their learning experience at kindergarten now forms the building blocks of their future education at primary and secondary school.
We kindly request that if you wish to start your child at kindergarten as a younger student (January to April birthdays) that you contact Mentone Pre School and organise a time to meet with our teachers to discuss your child, their development and individual learning needs.

Matilda was born in July 2020 and is currently enrolled in Mentone Preschool's 4 year old kindergarten program. Charlie was born on 30 March 2023, and is eligible for enrolment in Mentone Preschool's 3 year old kindergarten program in 2026 because his birthday is prior to 30 April 2023.
Whilst Charlie has met all his developmental milestones and is thriving, his mum Katie is unsure about whether Charlie is ready to start kindergarten in 2026. Charlie still requires lots of assistance with day to day tasks including nappy changes, eating and navigating play time with friends. She is considering deferring Charlie's commencement at 3 year old kindergarten to 2027.
Because of Matilda's attendance at Mentone Preschool, the Jones family can establish a prior connection to the service. This means that Charlie will get priority in securing a place over other children who do not have a prior connection. The Jones family will not lose this prior connection by deferring Charlie's place for another year. In considering Charlie's readiness, Katie needs to consider:
